About us

Nando’s in Canada

Nando’s first opened in South Africa in 1987 and soon became famous for its Portuguese style flame-grilled chicken with a PERi-PERi (African Birds Eye Chilli) kick. Since opening the first Canadian restaurant in Richmond, B.C. in 1994, it didn’t take long for word to spread like wildfire about the legendary PERi-PERi flavour with restaurants opening in the lower mainland of B.C. and Ontario to where it stands today with 39 restaurants spanning 3 provinces.

The Nando’s restaurant experience is a unique combination of warm Portuguese hospitality, hot flame-grilled chicken and, of course, the famous PERi-PERi flavour. Although you will find subtle differences in each of the restaurants, you will always find a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food, not to mention the Afro-Portuguese heritage that is reflected in many unique ways inside the restaurants. And to top things off, every member of the Nando’s family from the Nandocas (restaurant teams) to the Patraos (managers), take pride in helping guests along a journey to discover the magic that is Nando’s. Bom proveito! (Enjoy your meal!)

The Nando’s Experience

Minha casa e sua casa, or in English, our home is your home, and you, your family and friends will always enjoy a warm welcome at Nando’s. Our managers are called Patrao’s which is Portuguese for “Head of the house”, and our philosophy is that when entering a Nando’s restaurant our customers should be treated in the same way they would if they entered our home; with all the warmth and hospitality that this entails. You will be greeted with a smile and made to feel at home. Our experience is a unique combination of warm Portuguese hospitality, hot flame-grilled chicken and, of course, the famous PERi-PERi flavour. Although you will find subtle differences in each of the restaurants, you will always find a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food! Inside our restaurants, you will always find many unique ways reflecting our Afro-Portuguese heritage and in some cases, original South African art adorning the walls. It is believed that Nando’s globally has the world’s largest contemporary South African art collection and Canada is proud to share a part of that, it reminds us of our roots. Nando’s is a fast casual dining experience and is not fast food. Our food is made to order with the freshest of ingredients and you’ll enjoy eating using our hand crafted ceramic plates and cutlery. Our world famous flame-grilled chicken, fresh (never frozen) and marinated for 24 hours until the flavour goes right through to the bone, is then basted in your favourite PERi-PERi flavour – get ready for love at first bite!”

A tasty discovery

Peri Peri Chilis Growing Towards the Sun
“It tantalises the tastebuds and adds passion to a meal!”
Our brave Portuguese forefathers

It’s thanks to our Portuguese forefathers – brave explorers that they were – that Nando’s is around. That’s because, way back in the 15th century, they were introduced to the Bird’s Eye Chilli. Growing under the warm sun in the rich soils of Africa, this was a spice so nice, it had been named twice! Called PERi-PERi, this hot little number put fire in the explorers’ bellies and ignited passion in their souls.

They added it to a handful of herbs, spices, a squeeze of sun-ripened lemons and a dash of garlic. Together with their love of life, friends, fun and good food they created the first Gosto Delicioso (great taste) of addictive PERi-PERi sauce.

Today, our own recipe remains a closely-guarded secret. But what’s no secret is that we love sharing our forefathers’ traditions of hospitality, friendship, simple family pleasures and the addictive taste of PERi-PERi.

We can’t pinpoint exactly what makes it so addictive, but we do know it tantalises the tastebuds and adds passion to a meal! We believe (even if we don’t know for sure) that PERi-PERi releases endorphins in your body which create a sense of happiness and increased energy. Some say it gives the tastebuds a really great workout and others reckon it’s an aphrodisiac! But, we’ll leave that for you to find out. Enjoy the discovery!
